Luis Pena Added To PCL All-Star Roster
Date Posted: 7/11/2008
Sounds closer Luis Pena has been added to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and will participate in the 2008 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday evening in Louisville, Ky.
The fireballer is 1-0 with 14 saves and a 3.53 ERA (14er/35.2ip) in a team-high 37 appearances this season, while holding PCL opponents to a .240 average.
Pena's 14 saves currently tie for 2nd-most among PCL firemen. He has allowed only six runs in his last 31 outings (1.78 ERA in 30.1 IP) after being touched for eight runs in his initial five appearances this season (4.1 IP).
The All-Star nod is the third of the 25-year-old hurler's career. He was named to the Florida State League's mid-season All-Star team last season after a solid first half with Brevard County, but did not participate in that league's game due to a promotion. Pena's lone previous All-Star Game appearance came in the 2004 Midwest League contest.
The right-hander joins left-handed starting pitcher Lindsay Gulin and catcher Vinny Rottino in representing the Sounds in the Triple-A All-Star Game, which takes place at 6:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday night and will air on ESPN2.
Pena's addition became necessary when Tacoma pitcher Jared Wells was called up by the Seattle Mariners and Salt Lake's Jason Bulger withdrew from the contest.
