Sandy Guerrero joins the Sounds as hitting coach in 2009 after serving in the same position for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Double-A affiliate in Huntsville, Alabama for the previous six years.

The 43-year-old advances to Nashville this season along with many of the players that helped the Stars post a Southern League-best .285 batting average, 16 points higher than the second-best club mark. Guerrero’s stable of hitters in 2008 included the top three SL hitters by average (Angel Salome, .360; Mat Gamel, .329; Alcides Escobar, .328).

Guerrero served as the manager for the Northern Division in the 2007 Southern League All-Star Game after scheduled manager Don Money pulled out of the contest to coach in the MLB All-Star Futures Game.

Before joining the Brewers organization as a coach at Huntsville in 2003, Epifanio "Sandy" Guerrero – a native of the Dominican Republic – enjoyed a 19-year playing career.

A second baseman who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as an 18-year-old, Sandy began his career playing in Florida in the Gulf Coast Rookie League in 1984 and 1985 before being promoted in 1986 to Class A Ventura County (California League). Later that season, he moved over to the Brewers organization with Stockton, where he remained in 1987 and 1988. Guerrero moved up to the Double-A El Paso in 1989 and 1990 before he was promoted to Triple-A Denver in 1991 and remained there throughout 1992.

In 1993, Guerrero headed overseas to play in Taiwan, where he remained for six seasons, winning the CPBL batting title in 1998 with a .327 average. Next, he played three seasons for Campeche of the Mexican League. He ended his playing career in 2002, playing first for Tabasco of the Mexican League, then with the Independent Adirondack club of the Northern League.

His best season of affiliated ball came in 1992, when he hit .319 with five home runs and 44 RBI in 76 games for Denver.

Guerrero comes from a baseball family. His father, Epy, is a renowned Major League scout in the Dominican Republic who has unearthed over 40 Major Leaguers, while his brother, Mike, is the manager at the Brewers’ Class A Brevard County affiliate in the Florida State League. An uncle, Mario Guerrero, played in the major leagues.

Sandy and his wife, Jessica, reside in Huntsville, Alabama. Along with his native language of Spanish, Guerrero is fluent in Chinese and English.
